MAST is a medical examination linked to work in Sweden that involves climbing with large level differences. Its purpose is to assess whether a worker's health allows them to carry out such work safely, particularly where a sudden collapse, loss of consciousness or reduced capability could create a serious hazard.
Under AFS 2023:15 the requirements apply to work involving climbing with a level difference exceeding 13 m, where there is a risk of an uncontrolled fall or of rescue being obstructed.
The examination is carried out before such work begins and periodically thereafter. The next check should take place within 12 months at the latest, unless the doctor sets an earlier date.
The detailed scope of the examination also depends on your age, your health and the doctor's assessment.
The examination applies to people working in Sweden whose job involves climbing with a level difference exceeding 13 metres and where there is a risk of an uncontrolled fall or an obstructed rescue.
Where the scope of duties involves climbing in the conditions defined by AFS 2023:15.
Installation, servicing, maintenance or inspection requiring climbing with large level differences.
Where climbing carries a risk of an uncontrolled fall or of rescue being obstructed.
The actual working conditions and the employer's risk assessment are what decide.
The doctor collects information about your working conditions, health, medication and any factors that may matter for safe work involving climbing.
The examination includes a clinical assessment of the heart and lungs and a blood pressure measurement with an assessment of any tendency towards orthostatic reactions.
A resting ECG and a lipid profile are performed before work begins. At subsequent checks, how often these are repeated depends on your age and on the requirements of AFS 2023:15.
The doctor assesses cardiovascular risk; for people aged 40 and over the assessment also uses a recognised risk assessment tool.
Based on the examination as a whole, the doctor assesses whether your health allows you to perform the work covered by the MAST certificate.
It is not currently a mandatory part of the examination under AFS 2023:15. From 1 January 2024 the earlier requirement for an exercise test with ECG recording was replaced by a resting ECG, a lipid profile and a cardiovascular risk assessment. The doctor may nevertheless order further diagnostic tests where these are needed for a proper assessment.
